About Polygon Network Token (POL)

What is Polygon (POL)? Polygon is an Ethereum Layer 2 network—it extends Ethereum's capacity by processing transactions on a dedicated blockchain and settling them back to Ethereum for security. The Polyon network is EVM-compatible, so it works with the same wallet addresses, token standards, and apps as Ethereum, including MetaMask’s multichain wallet. The network's token was originally called MATIC and was renamed POL in September 2024 as part of a broader protocol upgrade. If you see "polygon crypto," "MATIC crypto," or "POL" in different places, they're all referring to the same network and the same token—POL is simply the current name. The current Polygon price is $0.08, with a 24-hour trading volume of $27,029,113.

The project started in 2017 as Matic Network, founded by Jaynti Kanani, Sandeep Nailwal, and Anurag Arjun—three Indian software engineers who set out to make Ethereum usable at scale. Mihailo Bjelic joined as a fourth co-founder shortly after. The team rebranded to Polygon in February 2021 to reflect an expanded vision beyond a single sidechain. Today Polygon Labs operates the network, with Marc Boiron as CEO and Sandeep Nailwal as Executive Chairman.

24h change: -2.80%. From $0.0781 to $0.0759.

  • The Ithaca hardfork activated on July 30 2026 introducing automatic failover mechanisms and transaction safeguards. This is part of Polygon's focus on building reliable infrastructure for stablecoin and fiat-linked payments. The change aims to reduce disruptions and support broader adoption for payments use cases on the network.
  • Mento Protocol launched on Polygon for local currency stablecoin payments. Kansai Electric Power's loyalty program now converts reward points into JPYC stablecoin on the network. A Lawson convenience store completed Japan's first POS-integrated stablecoin payment settled on Polygon in seconds.
  • POL trades near $0.076 with market cap around $810 million after small daily moves. The network recorded high transaction counts active addresses and token burns in recent weekly data. Analysts note ongoing disconnect between on-chain utility growth and token valuation.

24h change: +0.70%. From $0.0773 to $0.0778.

  • The ithaca hard fork went live on july 30 2026 bringing automatic failover that keeps transactions processing if a block producer stalls. It adds safeguards and better visibility for node operators to support consistent payments performance. This follows the giugliano upgrade earlier in 2026 that reduced finality times. The changes make the chain more resilient for real-world applications without disrupting users.
  • New integrations include mento protocol for local currency stablecoin payments and kansai electric power converting loyalty points into stablecoins on the polygon chain. Polygon open money stack now supports moving value between solana and polygon along with ethereum base and other evm chains. These launches demonstrate continued real-world adoption for payments and stablecoins in emerging markets. POL functions as the gas token and staking asset across this growing payments infrastructure.
  • Polygon continues work on the agglayer to connect evm chains for shared liquidity and atomic cross-chain transactions without traditional bridges. Full maturity is targeted throughout 2026 with integrations expanding to more chains and institutional participants. Recent examples include support for compliance blockchains backed by firms like apex group. This infrastructure positions POL with increased utility as the staking and settlement token across an interconnected ecosystem of chains.

24h change: +3.20%. From $0.0752 to $0.0776.

  • The Ithaca hard fork went live on July 30, 2026 at block 50185000. It introduces automatic failover to keep transactions flowing if a block producer stalls, new limits on oversized transactions that could strain the network, and better visibility for node operators. These changes make Polygon Chain steadier for the payments and stablecoin use cases you rely on. The upgrade is part of ongoing work to position the network as a dependable home for money movement.
  • Mento Protocol launched on Polygon to support local currency stablecoin payments. Kansai Electric Power now converts loyalty points into stablecoins usable on the chain. These integrations add to billions in stablecoin transfer volume and millions of active addresses. They demonstrate practical ways you can move value between traditional programs and onchain payments across regions.
  • Polygon Labs announced its second round of layoffs in 2026 while finalizing the acquisition of Coinme. The changes support the transition from a blockchain foundation into a blockchain-enabled payments company. This aligns with the emphasis on stablecoins, reliability upgrades, and real-world money movement across recent announcements. It reflects operational adjustments as the ecosystem matures.

24h change: +0.60%. From $0.0749 to $0.0754.

  • Polygon activated its Ithaca hard fork on mainnet at the end of July 2026. The upgrade adds automatic safeguards and failover mechanisms for block producers to prevent payment failures. It forms a key part of the Open Money Stack initiative aimed at moving all money onchain. This matters for users and developers seeking dependable infrastructure for payments and stablecoins on the network.
  • Mento Protocol launched for local currency stablecoin payments while Kansai Electric Power converts loyalty points into stablecoins on the chain. PayPal USD enables regulated onchain dollars with cross-border movement. These builds contribute to high stablecoin volumes and demonstrate practical utility beyond speculation. The developments align with Polygon's focus on bringing everyday money onchain through its Open Money Stack.
  • Polygon Labs completed a $250 million acquisition of Coinme and Sequence in early 2026 while conducting staff reductions to focus on stablecoin payments and Open Money Stack infrastructure. This represents the latest in a series of restructurings over recent years. The changes support enterprise adoption and real-world payment use cases. It reflects a strategic emphasis on building reliable onchain money rails.

24h change: -0.90%. From $0.0754 to $0.0747.

  • The Ithaca hardfork activated on Polygon mainnet at the end of July 2026. It adds automatic failover mechanisms and transaction safeguards to make payments more consistent and reliable. This technical improvement supports the chain's goal of handling thousands of payments per second at low cost and aligns with broader efforts to build robust infrastructure for everyday transactions.
  • Recent integrations include Mento Protocol for local currency stablecoins, PayPal USD for cross-border payments, and Kansai Electric converting loyalty points to stablecoins. The network recorded 743 million transactions in Q2 2026 and $79 billion in stablecoin transfers in May. These developments demonstrate growing real-world utility and institutional interest in Polygon for payments.
  • Despite on-chain growth, Polygon saw fewer new project deployments than Solana and other chains in early 2026. POL continues to trade around $0.075 after earlier declines linked to Layer-2 competition and TVL trends. Analyses from 2026 highlight questions around token utility capture in a multi-chain environment.
